freebsd-iconDuring my life, I have been always curious about FreeBSD. I have been always trying to learn more about it and actually, I learned the concepts of File Systems from the FreeBSD documentation.

After 2011 however, when I began the PhD, I didn’t look at the FreeBSD any more and I thought it will soon join the history!

Just this morning I was going through different web sites related to the Xilinx ZYNQ device and surprisingly I found a guy who is running the FreeBSD on the ARM host of the ZYNQ. I though with myself, “why some one should try to do that? we have the Linux running there on the ARM cores all fine. Do we need any thing else?”

In the afternoon however, something more interesting happened! I was thinking with myself, the XBOX One is definitely running Windows but what about Playstation 4? What is the Operating System running there? It should be some thing really robust and stable! So I began searching around and I came across this. Well it is again FreeBSD!

Why should Sony select the FreeBSD kernel for the heart of its console software? Because of licensing issues? Or may be because it is extremely stable.

There might be however other reasons as well. May be their choice of FreeBSD as the core of their Orbis OS is only because of licensing issues. Here are some further descriptions on this.
